E-vehicles had to - and have to - compete with fossil fuel powered vehicles mainly in three aspects: energy supply, range and sustainability.

However, the car industry and battery technology have made major progress in the past years, and further improvements can be reported on an almost daily basis. The hopes rest on a combination of lightweight vehicle construction and lithium-ion battery technology. Fast charging periods of around ten minutes have technically moved within reach. In addition to this comes the fact that a tripling of the range is highly likely in the near future: instead of driving 100 km with a battery weight of 100 kg, this should soon be 300 km and more with the latest technology. Manufacturers are already virtually guaranteeing a service life of 100,000 km for the lithium-ion batteries, while individual producers are already talking about 200,000 km.
